What is moving points forward?
Of the five teams in the group, three advance to the next round. The points earned by a team in matches against the other two teams from the group are carried forward with them. For example, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka win all of their matches and end up with eight points each. However, they will only carry over four points from matches against teams that qualified from their groups with them.
On the other hand, the West Indies carry no points into the next round, as their group stage victories were over Nepal and the United States, and neither of those teams qualified for the Super Six. The Netherlands and Scotland each have two points. For this reason, Shai Hope’s men are at a disadvantage.
In 2019, however, Afghanistan entered the Super Six with zero points, but managed to finish second in qualifying and participate in the World Cup in England.
How can the West Indies accomplish a similar feat this year?
They need to win all their matches in the Super Six — against Sri Lanka, Oman and Scotland — and hope the other results go their way, meaning only one other team can score more than six points, which is the maximum the Windies can get to. However, the West Indies have not been united in the tournament so far, and it will be very difficult to win all their matches.
What does this mean for India at the World Cup?
If the West Indies manage to slip through, they will be part of Qualifier 1 no matter where they finish, while Sri Lanka will be part of Qualifier 2. India will play both qualifiers at the end of the tournament.
The match against Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will be a replay of the 2011 final. Facing the islanders in sub-continental conditions can be a challenge, as they recently saw in the 2022 Asian Cup.
Meeting the Windies in Bengaluru in the final match of the group tournament will be a challenging prospect for India. With a strong lineup on a flat wicket and few boundaries, the men in burgundy might be able to upset the hosts.
Nevertheless, Zimbabwe are very likely to make it to the World Cup. Their historic 2022 T20 World Cup loss to Pakistan in Perth was an indication of how much their game has improved recently. With the experience of Craig Ervine and the talent of Sikander Raza, they are a force to be reckoned with.We have to be reckoned with, and the hosts are migrating.
Netherlands, Oman and Scotland have every chance, and if they qualify, India will look at these games as an easy two points.
