Ricky Ponting compares Ben Stokes’ ability to win games to MS Dhoni’s

The first one that comes to mind is probably someone like Dhoni, who is present at the end in many T20 matches and finishes games, while Ben does it at the end of test matches, and there are not many players in the history of the game who have been in that role and won games at the end, especially as captain. Ponting said he recalled Stokes’ winning pitch to Headingley during a thrilling final day at Lord’s.

I thought, and everybody probably thought he could do it again, because we’ve seen it happen before, but it was probably a little bit more of a win that they were chasing (in 2019), he said.

In the back of everyone’s mind, once things started happening the way they did, and how much similarity there was to Headingley in 2019…Steve Smith dropped it…and he got dropped in the 116th minute by Marcus Harris at Headingley, so those ghosts of the past kept popping up.
