Kane Williamson has two weeks to prove his fitness for the World Cup

We have about two weeks until we name the World Cup roster, said head coach Gary Stead.

We’re going to give it a full two weeks to prove what level he’s at and for us it’s still a bit of a crystal ball that he’s going to be in. All teams must submit their 15-man squads to the ICC by Sept. 5, and changes can be made until Sept. 27.

We’re going to give him every chance to make the most of that time. He’s doing a full rehab, he’s back playing in the net games, which is nice.

He’s progressing very well, but he’s got a lot of work to do to make sure he gets to the level we need him to. Williamson has joined the New Zealand squad for the white-ball tour of England, which starts on Wednesday. The Black Caps will play four T20I matches and as many ODIs before moving to India, where two matches will be played on September 29 and October 2 in preparation for the World Cup.

New Zealand will play England in the opener in Ahmedabad on October 5.

Stead reiterated that even if the Black Caps include Williamson in the squad, he may not play in the first few matches.

Tom Latham, who led New Zealand in Williamson’s absence, will captain the team for this important tournament as well.

These are all things we are weighing up at the moment, Stead said.

There is a possibility
