‘First we have India in the WTC finals’: Pat Cummins on talking about Ash

First we have India in the World Test Championship final, which I think a lot of people have forgotten, Cummins told reporters before the match at the Oval. India will play Australia in the final of the 2023 World Test Championship, which begins June 7 at the Oval in London.

A low over percentage in the test against India at the MCG cost Australia several points and kept it out of the WTC finals for the first time.

Reflecting on the first edition, the Australian skipper said it wasn’t until they saw India and New Zealand compete in the final in Southampton two years ago that it hit them.

I think as rookies we probably didn’t feel it until the game was played, and you saw how well New Zealand did there [in England], and you wish you could have been there, Cummins said at the beginning of the Australian Test summer last year, as quoted by Age.

It feels like a bit more the second time around. The first time, it felt like we missed an opportunity. So now each series gets a little more context, there’s something to play for.

Speaking of the championship, the 29-year-old driver said it provides global context and something to fight for.

The big series, say the Ashes or the Indian series, where four or five test matches are played, are definitely big battles, whereas the more conventional series, where two or three matches are played, it [the World Test Championship] gives them a more global context and something extra to compete for, he said.
