CSK is one of the most successful teams in IPL history, having won the title four times. But GT are no strangers to this: the defending champions want to become the first team to win two IPL titles in a row.
Interestingly, in 9 of the 12 finals since 2011, the team that won qualifier 1 has also won the final. Thus, history favors CSK.
MC Dhoni, CSK captain and one of the greatest batters in tournament history, will look to lead his team to victory in the finals. This will be CSK’s 10th appearance in the finals, and if they manage to win it, they will be tied with the Mumbai Indians, who have five titles.
Also, when Dhoni takes the field against GT, he will become the first player to play 250 matches in the IPL.
On the other hand, GT under Hardik Pandya may become only the third team captain after Dhoni and Rohit Sharma to win two consecutive IPL titles with his team.
GT star batsman Shubman Gill, who has scored 851 runs this season, is third on the list of batters with the most runs in an IPL season. He has just 13 runs left to overtake Jos Buttler. But to break Virat Kohli’s record of 973 runs in the 2016 IPL season, Gill needs to score 123 more runs.
CSK are the favorites, but GT has the potential to upset them. It should be an exciting finale and it will be interesting to see who picks up the trophy.
